History of the C197

Mercedes-AMG unleashed the C197 SLS AMG as a dramatic return to front-engine, naturally-aspirated performance sports cars.

Development began in 2005 with design cues intentionally referencing the legendary 300SL gullwing of 1954, establishing the modern icon.

The C197 launched globally in 2010 with the 6.2L V8 and revolutionary gullwing doors that became its defining character.

Production concluded in 2015 after 11,237 units, with the final example marking the end of naturally-aspirated V8 dominance in Mercedes-AMG.
